Those were my “initial” reaction to this episode, when I first watched it 10 months ago. Almost on the hour, actually. Now on the other hand, having seen everything of Wesley that I’ve gotten my flithy hand on, I wish I could take that back. This episode wasn’t so bad, is Wesley, and I’m sure that comment was more greif over Doyle than disappointment over Wesley. I mean, just over the course of this episode, he develops. When he realizes that he’s been tracking the wrong guy and that the serial killer he’s been hunting has kidnapped Cordelia, he immediatley loses some of his pretentions, his ego deflates (although I suspect its inflation might have been a defense mechanism all along), and he becomes more sympathetic.
And I’m really looking forward to seeing him evolve from this pathetic idiot, into the guy who without hesitation shoots his own father when he threatens Fred.

Is it sick that just readint the part behind the comma in your last sentence gave me spontaneous goosebumps?
Don’t worry. It was my initial reaction, too. I felt “damn, they’re just replacing him with a new and less cool guy!” But of course, I didn’t think much of it, that’s the kind of thing regular television-shows do, and at that point, I still didn’t suspect this would be The Best Show Ever and thus not victim to such petty customs. You, on the other hand, had been told this was something great (by me) and would of course have higher expectations.
To this day, however, I feel they could have waited one or maybe even two episodes before introducing Wesley, or they could have introduced him one or two episodes before Doyle died.
As for Wesley’s character development, you’re right, it’s amazing how much he progresses in almost every single episode just in season 1.
By the way, did you lose a word or something here: “This episode wasn’t so bad, is Wesley, “? ‘Cause I don’t get your meaning.

“readint”? Apparently, goosebumps kill attempts to type properly.

I think the “is Wesley” part was supposed to be removed. Must have forgotten it. Im not one for proffreading, either.

Not at all, at least not if I can be classified as a mentally healthy individual. However, using me as a basis for this kind of analysis is dubious, at best, so…

I’m not touching that, even with a pole of any given length.

Totally understandable and acceptable. I wouldn’t, either. Believe me.

After all, that’s why I make these kinds of ambiguous comments — so that I won’t have to think of it.
