Last Sunday, when riding a city bus on my way back from the cinema (where I’d seen “Children of Men” ), I suddenly felt the urge to watch “Serendipity” — a romantic comedy from with Kate Beckinsale and John Cusak.

“Serendipity” supposedly means “a lucky coincidence”, or some such (it also looks as if it’s a PHP based weblog system). In this case, the lucky coincidence involves two people meeting by chance in New York, spending one afternoon with each other, and then being separated for five or six years. But not before falling heads over heals in love with each other, of course. (Remember the rape!) So, after these five or six years they are both about to be married, but naturally they still think of the stranger they fell in love with once. There’s also some stuff about signs and destiny and such things, but I won’t bother to go into details.

Anyway, I’m not exactly what you’d call a rom com fanatic — even though I probably watch more of them than most other boys my age (am I too old to refer to myself as a boy? Nah. Still twelve, me) — so I’m not able to say how this film is compared to the “regular” rom com. But what I can do is to compare ti to the few rom coms I remember, and what I then realise, is of course that “Serendipity” is unable to measure up with “Love Actually“, “Down With Love“. However, it is at least on par with e.g. “My Fat Greek Wedding” (which I’ve only seen once, and that was over two years ago; I had just had my first economics lecture, and needed something with which to relax), “Sweet Home Alabama“, and other such flicks. It might even be better.

All in all I thought they succeeded with the romantics, but not so much with the comdey. Not to say that I didn’t find it witty or amusing, but it didn’t have any of those scenes that the top of the crop of romantic comedies have. 6.0/10.
