Damn, another awesome episode. What is it about this season that makes it so attractive for good episodes?
First off, it’s a Gwen episode. And those’re always entertaining, with her Rogue-like vulnerability and her thieving coolness. Mix that up with some of that Gunn cool, and you’ve almost got an episode in which the electrons stop moving. (Wow, my first science joke. Too bad it was so cheap.
)
Not to mention that Gwen looks to be really good for Gunn; she doesn’t have any of that “sit tight, muscle guy” attitude towards him that the Angelettes so often do. Rather, she boosts his self esteem by giving him opportunities to show how versatile he is. Despite of this little momentary boost, though, it’s not hard to see how the groundwork for his choices in season 5 is lain.
Furthermore, this episode had someother neat scenes. Naturally, there’s the goading stuff, in which Angel, deliberately or not, teases Evil Cordelia, until she’s flushed into the open. In my humble opinion, the first of these goadings were the best, when Angel dissed the Beastmaster in conversation with Cordy. “When you say ‘insane’, you really mean ‘diabolical’, right?” “No, I’m talking about the demented, deluded kind.” Awesome stuff. Not that the final scene with Lorne in his DnD cape is any less awesome, but I’ve always preferred dialogue to mummery. Even if it’s a close race in this case.
But I should be getting out of bed soon. Got stuff to do before the season finale later tonight, so… later.
