First of all: Yay for episode titles that paraphrase REM song titles!
Next: I thought this episode was absolutely hilarious, at least up until Fred’s revelation. I mean, the way Angel and Connor acts when they get back to the hotel in the first scene. The way the other Angelettes react to their seemingly mad ramblings. The way they all behave when they meet Jasmine for the first time. The way they all sit around her on the floor, like children listening to fairy tales (which I guess it is). The way Jasmine and Fred sit in the middle of the bowling hall carnage. It just cracks me up.
But at the same time, I feel kinda queasy. Why? Obviously, there’s the whole “perfect world” vision, with everyone living in perfect harmony. But it comes with a cost, naturally. Like the loss of critical, free thinking. The loss of “free will” (if such a thing ever existed). It all reminds me of one of the “future societies” you could model your civilisation after in Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri, the “Thought Control” society, where gases were emitted into the atmosphere in order to keep the populace content and meek. You know? You get peace, harmony, and the whole hippie dreamland package, but you have to surrender huge parts of your humanity in order to get there. Not to mention the diabolical sides of Jasmine, which I seem to remember as coming more into focus later…
EDIT: Oh, and Angel in a white shirt with yellow stripes!
