The weakest one of the original trilogy, and probably one of the weakest ones if one considers the prequels, as well.

Much of the movie is set off for the rescue operation, where Han is saved from the clutches of Jabba, a plot thread that to me has only a few attractions. One of which is the scene where Jabba’s sail barge explodes, of course — one of the best explotions in the saga, that — while the other one is Luke trying to act all cool and sensible like. Naturally, no one really buys his act, but it’s a nice try none the less. A good change from his earlier whinyness.

The next hour or so is… well, rather weak. There are some moments on Dagobah that are acceptable, like Yoda’s death and the subsequent appearance of Ben Kenobi, as well as in the Imperial shuttle, on the way to the forest moon. (Oh my fucking gods, I can’t believe I almost forgot the name “Endor”! ) But then things go downward for a while. The Ewoks are dull, boring and makes me drowsy (can you spell p-l-e-o-n-a-s-m? ), the same goes for the “speeder chase”, the battle of the generator, and the Ewoks.

Then, however, the horribleness ends. For the Luke-Vader-Emperor scenes? Bordering on awesome. And the great space battle? One of the best I know of. (Not that I really know of that many, but you get my point, eh? )

There’s not really much more than this to say, so I’ll just wrap things up with a rating: 5.5/10. (I’ll probably jack AOTC up a couple of notches later, now that I’ve got this Haydn-hate out of my system…)
