Ugh, I just wasted a Hell of a lot more energy on “Daredevil” than I had intended, so this might be a short review.
“Underworld Evolution” is far from as good as “Underworld“. The plot was way too ordinary for me to even consider rating them equally high, and the mythos is still not explained to a satisfactory degree, I think. This is perhaps my biggest beef with the film, that despite of its deepening of the story never really cleared up on a whole lot of things about, say, the nature of vampires. This, I feel, is a huge minus in every vampire story in which the vampires are much different from Stoker’s Dracula. Because here, it seems as if vampires aren’t dead; they’re just immortals who pay something of a price for their immortality. Of course, the whole undeadness is probably implied, but if it is, then why do the vampires constantly say things like “we must stay alive”? Sure, it could be glibs from their side, but all in all, I don’t think it makes much sense. And there are lots of things like this; sadly, the movie wasn’t good enough for me to remember tiny things like this for more than an hour or two after watching it.
On the other hand, the movie was thrilling and had a lot of suspense and good action, so the mythos problems didn’t bother me that much. Also, as in its prequel, the scenery and the general atmosphere was exquisitely made. This were dark and gritty and cold, but at the same time especially the vampires were very elegant and eerie.
Like I said above, this one had nothing like the plot twist of the first movie (which still gives me small shivers when I think of it), and I thought it was less able to stand alone on its own — the continuity to its prequel was too substantial for that (and thank goodness for that; I think that if I watch these two back to back, I’ll get much more out of “Evolution”, and probably “Underworld”, too). But beyond that? A nice little movie. I still prefer “Brotherhood of the Wolf” when it comes to werewolf flicks, but hey. We can’t all be French.
