Wow. I just read Whedon’s first X-Men story again, and boy, is it great. (“Just read” of course meaning just before writing this, not just before posting it.)
Sure, it obviously builds on a lot of continuity of which I know approximately squat, but it still manages to pull me in and move me. Like the scene where Kitty finds Colossus in the Benetech “sub-basement”. Brought me to tears, it did.
The characters are, interestingly enough, even more fascinating here than they have ever become in the “Ultimate X-Men” run (which I’m beginning to lose faith in; mediocrity is currently balancing out the good parts, if I remember correctly), and the plotting is just awesome. The way Whedon constantly builds suspense is great, even if he might be using the “character standing in darkness behind an other, well-lit character, while saying ominous things” a little too frequent. But I’ll give him credit for not keeping all of these plot moments unresolved al through the story.
Anyway, this post is just here to pay tribute to the amazing character writer that is Joss Whedon.
EDIT: I’ve read “Dangerous” too, now, and it was better than I remembered. The “villain” wasn’t as annoying as I thought — I usually don’t like non-human (or non-sentient) “bad guys”, since they mainly just follow their instincts, and that ain’t fun. Or, you could of course make an argument for humans only following their instincts, too, but they’re more familiar, more… bah, I can’t explain it at the moment; my parents have the TV on so loud I can’t hear myself think. I’ll get back to it later.
But in this instance, it was kinda okay. And the Kitty/Colossus moment gave me goosebumps. Can’t wait to read “Torn”!

Yeah, once Millar and Bendis get done with “Ultimate X-men” it loses a lot of its quality, though by volume 14 it’s rather good again.
“Ultimate Spider-man”, however, holds much higher quality through and through, you might want to check out that one. Or “The Ultimates”, which has just two volumes yet and thus is way more affordable.

Yeah, I’ve got the first “The Ultimates” hardcover, and that one was rather interesting, seeing as I didn’t know anything of the characters in it prior to reading it, except the few glimpses I’d seen of them in “Ultimate X-men”. And I’m considering to waste next summer’s pay on a couple of “Ultimate Spidey” hardcovers, possibly all of them.
As for UX-men, I agree about the last volume: The story where Magneto was sprung from his glass prison in the Triskelon was rather good (as was the one in which he was captured), and carried in it so much promise. I guess saying this to you is pretty redundant, but I’ll do so anyway: It’s bloody Magneto, for Balder’s sake!

HARDCOVERS?
The man’s made out of money. O.o
And yes, UX with Magneto is ten shades of brilliant, UX without him, not so much, especially after Bendis and Millar left.

Fun fact: Hardcovers from Amazon.co.uk cost about as much as paperbacks from Outland, if I remember and convert correctly.
And UX without Magneto tends to get really unfocused.

Well, it’s still wasting money. Reason I buy stuff at Outland is to get it straight away, when you’re going to have to wait anyway, why pay as much as you’d have to pay to get them immediately? O.o

I rarely read things right after buying them anyway, so that doesn’t matter much to me.
But paperback versus hardcover…
Paperbacks don’t take up as much space as hardcovers, but hardcovers should be more durable, so…
Come to think of it, that should perhaps matter more to me: I don’t have too much room to spare, and the durability of the paperbacks seems to be just fine. So maybe I should get the paperbacks if I decide to start reading Ultimate Spider-Man…

I’d think so, yes. I’m only buying paperbacks, and I’m running out of space even so.
