“Trainspotting” is a movie with many deeply disturbing scenes. Its theme is drug abuse and the consequences this has on a person’s life. It’s set in what must be the ugliest parts of Edinburgh, a city I’ve never heard praised for its beauty. There’s truly meaningless, accidental death; HIV; overdoses; the nastiest toilet in Scotland; excrements; some of the least sympathetic characters ever conceived; and Ewan McGregor’s cock.
And yet, it manages to be funny. It’s like the movie’s cracking hillarious jokes at you while kicking you in the kidneys, and in spite of yourself, you just can’t help but laugh.
Great movie. If you haven’t seen it, go redeem youself, because this is ugly perfection. 10/10.

I think I’ve seen this movie about five times, and yes it’s great. You might consider to read the book it’s based on, it’s even ‘worse’, if you understand.

So, what do you think of those people who say that “Trainspotting” promotes drug use?

I really don’t think it does, it just shows how things are for these people. Fun at first, but not that fun after a while. This probably comes clearer out in the book. I’ve actually not been able to read it more than once.

I don’t think so either. I mean, it’sjust to look at all the horrendous situations they end up in because of the drugs, and then I think one’d quickly realise that there’s absolutely no drug promotion in it. Quite the contrary, in fact.
The thing that got my thinking about this was that apparently the American senator Bob Dole attacked it for promoting drug use back when it was first released, but later he admitted that he hadn’t even seen it. Now that’s a shocker.
