“Ronin” is Japanese, it seems, and refers to a samurai who has lost his master without doing the honourable thing, and now roams the countryside, looking for work or redemption. Here, in this movie, the “ronin” are agents, remnants of the cold war, who are hired by renegade IRA terrorists to do a job. They do what they’re paid to do, but when one of them betrays the rest, they have to hunt this one down to be able to claim their payment. Naturally, this results in a hell of a lot of cold assassinations, remarkably thrilling car chases (I’m usually bored during these, but not in this case), and other such sool stuff.
This is another solid piece of handiwork. It’s a exciting and often surprising story, with some top-notch acting (De Niro, Reno, Skarsgård, and more), decent characterisations, and a couple of iconic scenes. It is, however, little else than entertainment. Which is okay, but not the way to get the best ratings from me.
7.5/10.
