The object of observation last Friday: “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit“.
Wallace and Gromit are doing quite well in their new jobs as pest controllers. Their village’s annual “giant vegetable competition” is close, and all the town’s inhabitants are eager to secure their services, in the hopes that Wallace and Gromit in turn will ensure the security of the giant vegetables. However, there is a problem. Wallace isn’t too keen on killing the small pests, and so their house is about to burst as every avaliable space is occupied by rabbit pens.
Naturally Wallace thinks up an equally naturally technological solution, of which Gromit as usual expresses his skepticism about. And no wonder: Wallace plans on using a new machine to reprogram the rabbits, to teach them not to eat vegetables. The plan goes awry, of course, and before long the village and its giant vegetable population is terrorised by a humongous rabbit — the Were-Rabbit of yore!
This is an incredibly silly movie, and it’s not meant to be anything else, either. Sure, in between the demented characters (my personal favourite is the reverend), the awesome puns, and the rest of the ridiculousness, there are references to things like “Frankenstein”, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”, “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park”, but these are just silly, too. An interpretation of the movie as a warning against tampering with nature would probably be too radical.
All in all a splendid 9.0/10.
