I watched Ben Stiller’s “Zoolander” almost three weeks ago, but haven’t gotten around to reviewing it until now. I guess I forgot about it when I last caught up with my reviewing…
Anyway, this is just about one of the silliest movies I know of. It is set in a New York fashion environment, with Ben Stiller playing the role as Derek Zoolander, a legend in male modelling. For ten years or so, he’s been the best of the best, but now a new generation is taking over, represented by the arrogant Hansel, played by Owen Wilson.
The rivalry between these two plays a major role in the movie, of course, but they’ve also thrown in a bit about some fashion jefes plotting to assassinate the Malaysian prime minister because of his plans to raise the minimum wages.
Like I said, this is a silly movie. The male models are all dumb as posts — as can be illustrated by the legendary gasoline fight scene — and the people surrounding them are only slightly better. The acting is well over the top, as can be expected from a movie where the villains is played by Will Ferrell, and the story seems to be there mainly to provide a backdrop for the gags.
However, and here “Zoolander” resembles “Wayne’s World” quite a lot, the gags work. The sillyness is actually funny, at least if you don’t expect anything to be very intelligent, and there are a lot of fun little details that make it well worth a second, or even a third re-watch.
All in all, a 6.0/10, but only if you’re interested in ridiculous amounts of silly, completely devoid of substance.
