It’s been over a year and a half since the (first and) last time, but I finally got around to watch “Serenity” again.
And it was a pleasant surprise; before I watched it again, after having watched the series a second time, I feared that the relationship between the characters would be messed up, and that the action would take up too much space, but neither of these were true. The characters related to each other just as they had done in the series, and while the emphasis on action scenes was a tad more prominent than it was in the series, it wasn’t too bad.
Some things annoyed me a bit, such as slightly darker colours (this seemed to have something to do with the filming, though), the way they filmed it (they used a hand-held in the series, too, but they used it differently there, and it was less unsteady and less crammed), and possibly the editing.
But these were just trifles, and I won’t make much fuss over them. More serious was the fact that they’d been forced to cram two seasons’ worth of plot development into one movie, and that things might’ve gone a tad too fast. I didn’t have much trouble keeping up, but I had to pause the movie and explain things to my sister a few times. And since it’s usually the other way around, this concerned me a bit.
Still, though, the best Space Opera movie I’ve ever seen, and I choose to blame Fox and the unfamiliar producers for the things I didn’t like about it. 8.5/10.
