It’s as good as the first couple of episodes of Angel, possibly better, with some interesting characters (Jason Dohring’s Josef Konstantin’s a favourite), a sound mythology (excepting a bit of inconsistency what concerns shadows and reflections and the like), and a few moral semi-ambiguities. It’s more pure noir, though, and the dialogue isn’t as sharp as Angel’s, but let’s face it: hardly anything has as good dialogue as Angel.
I think I’m gonna drop Journeyman like a bag of crap, and start watching this instead.

Huh, really? Everybody I’ve heard from discared it as absolute crap ‘cept for Dohring’s character, and I wasn’t going to bother with it. But if you’re this positive…
Seriously, “City of…” is an awesome pilot. Angel’s first season don’t have the best set of episodes, but the pilot is very good. And you think this is possibly better?
I say again; huh.

Of course, if you watch it and expect Angel, you’re bound to be disappointed. And sure, I’ve probably exaggerated its quality, but it sure as hell isn’t absolute crap. Granted, the first episode might be merely mediocre, and the second one “only” good, but I thought it was worth my while.
I’ll admit that it’s hardly among the best shows I’ve seen, but that might have something to do with me only watching “the best” up until now. I don’t really like spending too much time watching television shows, so I usually try to watch only those I’ve had recommended to me from several people whose tastes I trust. Which, some to think of it, should actually be an argument against me watching this show, seeing as it obviously isn’t among the best. But I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt, and see if it develops in more interesting directions.
Whoa. I think I just struck gold in regards to why I watch the show, and why I mentioned it so flatteringly: It’s because I hope it has potential, that it’ll turn out to be better than it seems. I’m not saying it’s not good, mind you — to use a parallell to Fantasy, I think it might be on a level comparable to that of SoT and WoT — but that I hope it’ll evolve and grow better. Into a kind of Angel surrogate, I guess.
So I’ll watch a couple episodes more, and get back to you on this. I suspect I haven’t really watched enough shows to evalute one after just two episodes…
Thanks for the skepticism, Loki. I always appreciate it.

Well, the only people I’ve talked to had only watched the first at the time (they would watch a couple more before giving it up though) but aside from Dohring, they were exclusively negative. Let me know how it turns out - if you still like it after five or six episodes, I’ll give it a shot.
