Incredible.
At times I thought it lacked a bit more obvious season plot arc, and I’d liked to see Bullock being more active, rather than just reactive, but those are just about the only objections I have to the show.
Amazing setting, mindblowing characters, spiffy dialogue, and a delightfully rancid humour. One of the best shows I’ve seen, if not the best. Not my favourite, but definitely one of them.
My most sincere gratitude to Loki for recommending this show. His taste proved to be as sound as ever.
Can’t wait to get started on the second season.

Oh, and, yeah, I agree, Bullock is too reactive for his own and his town’s good, but it seems to be in his character to be so. It’s also very neatly counter-pointed by Swearengen’s very active and even proactive machinations.

And thanks for the mention, kind of you to credit me with what is really just a “do as Master Martin bids ye”-statement.
But seriously - my interest in the American Old West is fleeting at best, yet this show amazed me more than just about anything I’ve watched in recent years. That’s saying a lot.

Well, I wrote it as a draft first, then made some other drafts, then posted all of these simultaneously. and in these cases WordPress publishes the posts chronologically — i.e. starting with the one that was written first. Which is really lame, and kinda undermines the whole draft concept, I think, but that’s just the way it is…

True, and true. Bullock did after all move to Deadwood to be left alone and run his business, so no wonder he’s not too keen on getting more involved than he already is. And Swearengen… well, what can one say?

What you can say? “THAT’s how you clean a fucking bloodstain!”, that’s what you can say. ;D
Funny, by the way, after having spent the summer and early fall watching West Wing and Deadwood, I rewatched one of the Babylon 5 tv-movies, “The River of Souls”, and lo and behold, the two main characters in it beyond the ones taken from the tv-show were played by Ian McShane and Martin Sheen.
Now THAT is just awesome. McShane had little interesting to do, poor chap, but Sheen really did well in a part which is very unlike anything else I’ve seen him in.

Couldn’t find a pic where you see his entire face, though.

Good luck with that. It’s a show very worth the watch.
