Watched Kevin Smith’s Dogma again, for the thrid time or so, last weekend. I was hardly as enthusiastic as I was the first time I watched it, but that was three years ago, so I take this simply as a sign that I have matured somewhat. And also of me having watched it before, of course.
Smith’s tale of faith and religion and toilet humour, where the last of Christ’s descendents has to stop a couple of cast-out angels from returning to Heaven, still has its moments, though. Loki and Bartleby, for example, are still pretty damn amusing to watch, and Alan Rickman is splendid as the voice of God, the Metatron. (It feels kinda redundant, saying that Rickman is splendid, cos, you know, he always is.) And Alanis Morisette do a nice job as God.
But I’m getting a bit tired of Jay and Silent Bob. Or, to be precise, I’m getting tired of Jay. Bob’s okay. Of course, his ridiculous stupidity and lack of tact makes for a lot of relatively amusing jokes, but I quickly tire of him. And the “main character”, the last descendent, is played by a rubbish actress, who obviously tries to act all disillusioned and stuff, but falls miserably short. Also, a lot of the dialogue is crammed so full of religious commentary, it rarely flows naturally.
However, this doesn’t take much from many of the gags, which are still fun, and unless you come expecting profound comments on religion, but rather just look for a fantasy comedy which draws heavily from Christian mythology, you should be able to get a lot of laughs out of this. Unless, you know, you take religion a bit too seriously. Then you probably won’t like it at all.
