I love movies. And I hate some of them, too. I try to watch at least 104 of them each year, averagely two per week, and I chronicle them all in a book I keep on my bedstand. Some of the films I see will also be more thoroughly reviewed here.

The Illusionist

What to say of The Illusionist? It’s a very plot-driven and -focused movie, with some great twists and turns, where a young Austrian stage magician struggles to win the love of his childhood darling.
Sounds like dull stuff, right? Well, it gets a bit more interesting once we discover that the childhood sweetheart is engaged with [...]

The Golden Compass

I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time, but it wasn’t until earlier this week that I finally got around to getting myself to a screening of The Golden Compass.
In a parallel steampunk universe, the Catholic Church-like Authority is trying to suppress all competition and innovation, in their belief that this is what’s [...]

… and the first ones of 2008

A few ones more…
Ghostbusters
Do I really have to sum up the plot? Didn’t think so. So, this used to be one of me and my friends’ favourite movies when we were 7-8 years old, and I have no idea how long I’ve spent playing Ghostbusters with sticks or LEGO. The movie was still fun, but [...]

The last movies of 2007…

I’ve been over a month since I last reviewed any movies, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t watched any since.
America’s Sweethearts
A romantic comedy about two self-absorbed actors who’ve been an item for several years. Has some parodical elements which are worth watching — especially the ones involving Billy Crystal’s calculated PR man — but the [...]

Wastin’ money

Be that as it may, seeing as I don’t think I’ll fail any of my exams, I decided to take a quick trip downtown, to visit my favourite purveyors of fine leisure activities.
The first of these was Avalon, also known as Gotham. I was primarily looking for John Scalzi’s Ghost Brigades, but it as turned [...]

Starship Troopers

I was supposed to go watch Elizabeth: The Golden Age with two of my flatmates, but it seems it’s on its way out. And as there wasn’t really anything else that was all that appealing, we decided to watch a DVD instead. After a lengthy discussion, we (meaning my two male flatmates and myself; out [...]

Dogma

Watched Kevin Smith’s Dogma again, for the thrid time or so, last weekend. I was hardly as enthusiastic as I was the first time I watched it, but that was three years ago, so I take this simply as a sign that I have matured somewhat. And also of me having watched it before, of [...]

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

I’ve heard rumours about The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen being disliked by a great many people, especially those who have read the comics. However, while I agree that this is hardly a masterpiece, I still think it’s great fun.
Sure, the dialogue’s not always top notch, and the plot is predictable. But most of the characters [...]

Beowulf

Beowulf, the movie adaptation of the Old English poem, was a fun experience, especially as it was the first movie I’ve watched in 3D.
I only knew of the content of the poem from John Gardner’s Grendel, which is told from (surprise) the monster’s point of view, and that one pretty much ended with Grendel’s death, [...]

‘Tis been a good day, so far…

First, I took my NwN Dwarven monk through a couple of levels. Which is always fun, as they get so many feats and special abilities, it’s a treat to play them. Then, just as I had cleared level 7 and killed Head Gaoler Aelfinn, I was roused by my flatmates who desired my company for [...]

Valentine

Heh, one of my flatmates and I just spent the last couple of hours taking cheap shots at Valentine, a rather silly slasher movie from 2001.
A bunch of snotty girls have picked on a nerd all through elementary school, until they in 9th grade get the kid sent away to a mental institution by claiming [...]

München

München has also been neglected for a while.
It portrays both the murder of half a dozen Israeli athletes in München during the 1972 Olympics, and Mossad’s retribution afterwards. The emphasis is on the latter, and follows a team of agents who are given a list of 12 names, of prominent Fatah members they are to [...]

V for Vendetta

I watched V for Vendetta a couple of weeks ago, but bloody useless Neverwinter Nights has been stealing all my time since.
I love Evey’s story, and the way they’ve managed to keep so much of the comic’s plots. Inspector Finch is great, as is Deitrich, as well as most of the other characters. The “morale” [...]

X-Men: The Last Stand

I feel like beating myself around the head with a heavy stick. Over a month ago, I watched X-Men: The Last Stand, and I have neither reviewed it here, nor entered into my movie log. Action must be taken; amends must be made!
Knowing my very exclusive readership, I’ll skip my usual half-arsed attempt at a [...]

Dodgeball

After the pretentiousness and boredom of yesterday’s The Crow, today’s Dodgeball was refreshing.
As my earlier review of Zoolander might indicate, I’m a huge fan of Ben Stiller so long as he does his best to be silly and over the top. Sure, he can get a bit too over the top at times, but most [...]

The Crow

I watched The Crow earlier tonight, and I have to say I very much doubt that it would be as famous as it is today if Brandon Lee hadn’t met such an unfortunate end during the shooting of the movie. Cos boy, this was mediocre stuff.
First of all, the plot. Eric Draven, only described as [...]

Elizabeth

Elizabeth has always been one of my favourite historical dramas, and possibly the favourite. And, being the innocent boy I was when I last watched it, I thought it was fairly correct, history-wise. Now, I’m less sure.
Obviously, the fact that historical events are be portrayed in a dramatic narrative should always bring out one’s inner [...]

Inspired by the blogger formerly known as Lotta…

I decided to change my on-screen handle again:
Dread Pirate Terje.
Now, I’m not one of those people who think pirates are cool (quite the contrary, in fact, bloody murderous pigs as they were), but what I think is cool, is (a) cheesy fantasy movies from the 80s (well, some of them, anyway), and (b) turn-based strategy [...]

Ninja Scroll

My Exalted GM is always complaining that I don’t get into the spirit of the game enough (a spirit which can be summed up as “there is no such thing as over the top!”, and yes, they use that exclamation mark), so I thought I’d check out one of the movies that are recommended in [...]
