Seeing Red: A Case in the Study of Joss Whedon, Sadistic Genious
This has got to be one of the best worst minutes of television I have ever seen. Observe, if you will, these four moments:
1. Bliss, as Buffy and Xander make up and embrace.
2. Dread, as Warren appears, toting a gun.
3. Grief, and/or anguish, as a stray bullet from Warren’s gun penetrates Tara’s chest, and her [...]
The Terminator
“The Terminator” is a strong movie on practically all counts, but I have to dock it a few points because of the 80s atmosphere. Imagine what this one could have been with some heavy industrial metal instead of that constant synth whining.
7.5/10.
Still a good movie, though. Reminded me somewhat of “Blade Runner” and “Alien”.
Dungeons & Dragons
You know, if you remove some 70% of the title of “Dungeons and Dragons“, you’re left with a fitting description of its contents:
Dung.
1.5/10.
Ghost Dog — The Way of the Samurai
“Ghost Dog” is, now that I’ve reduced my estimations of “Full Metal Jacket” and “The Merchant of Venice”, the best movie I’ve seen since I watched “Trainspotting” a month and a half ago.
Ghost Dog is a hitman working for the Italian mafia, and he’s a perfect professional. And also kinda quirky, as he follows the [...]
Ronin
“Ronin” is Japanese, it seems, and refers to a samurai who has lost his master without doing the honourable thing, and now roams the countryside, looking for work or redemption. Here, in this movie, the “ronin” are agents, remnants of the cold war, who are hired by renegade IRA terrorists to do a job. They [...]
Miller’s Crossing
I originally bought “Miller’s Crossing” because it was on the same DVD as “Road to Perdition”, a movie I’d wanted to see for quite some time. That I got a movie I hadn’t even heard of before in the bargain, was just a bonus. So, when I casually skimmed my movie shelves for something to [...]
This is Spinal Tap
Sigh. It’s been a fairly busy week, movie-wise, and so now I’m five or six reviews behind again. Man, this sucks…
Anyway, I watched “This is Spinal Tap” last Thursday or Friday. This is probably the most famous mockumentary ever, tracking the attempted comeback tour of a hard rock band called Spinal Tap. They had a [...]
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
In an interview with Joss Whedon done by one of the Marvel guys, I saw him brag about “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” as one of the best ones made in 2005.
And whaddayaknow — I think I might agree. If you wanna know what the result would look like if The Master were to make a [...]
The Merchant of Venice
The backside of almost having filled these six months’ quota in only five months? I’m really beginning to tiring of writing film reviews, especially as I don’t seem to get any better at it.
Anyway. We watched “The Merchant of Venice” last… Sunday, I believe it was, an 2004 adaption of William Shakespeare’s classic play. I’ve [...]
Blueberry
Described by a poster on the IMDB boards (the Black Hole of the Internet, as far as I have seen; they don’t seem to be moderated in the least, and practically every thread I’ve seen has devolved into name-calling and/or empty polemics) as “Utter crap French pretentious wank” and “Slow as molasses and devoid of [...]
Goosebumps!
“Reaper’s Gale”, p. 365, the thoughts of Atri-Preda Yan Tovis of the Letherii Army:
“The Malazans are on our shore.”
Farlig Farvann (Dangerous Waters)
Almost immediately after “Full Metal Jacket” was finished, a Norwegian film — “Farlig Farvann” — was aired on another channel. It didn’t sound very interesting or fun, so I wouldn’t normally have watched it, but Håvard decided to see if it was any good, and as I’m trying to change my asocial ways, I thought [...]
Full Metal Jacket
The Norwegian national broadcasting company aired “Full Metal Jacket” movie a couple of days ago, and I watched it, although I don’t usually just spontaneously decide to watch a movie I happen to come across when channel-surfing. A fact that should be counted in the movie’s favour.
I’ve seen this movie at least four times now, [...]
“Reaper’s Gale” — about 150 pages in…
I’ve decided (uh…) to take it more easy with this book than I have done with some of its prequels. I finished “Bonehunters” in about three days, for example, and while it was quite fun while it lasted, it didn’t last for very long.
Naturally, how much I have to do with this decision is open [...]
Ironic distance to “Buffy”? I think not…
Usually, when I’m watching a movie, a television show, or anything like that, I’m keep something of an ironic distance. I tend to laugh at things, to make fun, and to generally not take things seriously. Or, at least this applies when I’m watching something with others.
However, for a couple of nights now, I’ve been [...]
Emily the Strange
Thought I’d pick up an issue of this thing, just to see what the hell it was, and it turned out that was exactly what it was: Hell.
Boring, pointless, pretentious, incoherent, you name it.
Most wasted NOK 49,50 I’ve ever spent.
The Lords of Television Be Praised!
“Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip” — the show with TV’s third cheesiest title, after “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” — will return to American screens with episode 17 on Thursday, May 24, 2007!
And there was much rejoycing!
The Octagon
When Kalle, Håvard and myself was at the hospital yesterday, the two former ones found a cheap DVD box in the hospital’s kiosk, a box containing three of Chuck Norris’ most famous movies. And as both Kalle and Håvard think Chuck Norris jokes are hilarious, they couldn’t do anything but buy this abomination. And tonight, [...]
X-Men 2
After coming home from “Spider-Man 3″, Kalle and I wanted to watch a really good Marvel movie, and decided to take a peek at one of my favourite superhero comic book adaption, “X-Men 2“.
It’s epic.
It has some great character moments.
There’s at least some semblance of character development.
It has an awesome cast, all of which deliver [...]
