This was a very peculiar season. It starts off really slow with the longest streak of bad, consecutive episodes in history and then it suddenly jumps out with the single best Doctor Who episode I’ve ever seen. It ends on a higher note than what it began with, but overall this was very disappointing season. If it hadn’t been for “Blink”, I would’ve been furious.
But “Blink” was so scary and awesome that I have to mellow my overall rating of the season. If you’re just gonna watch a single Doctor Who episode in your life, “Blink” should be it. You’d probably not get a lot out of it, seeing as it plays brilliantly with the rules established about the Doctor, and the Doctor is really more of a supporting actor in this one.
Freema Agyeman is the new Companion, and she’s o.k. I guess. She’s no better or worse an actor than Billie Piper was (though she’s a lot prettier than her), but we have to suffer through a lot of the same problems that Billie Piper went through in her first season, and that gets old really quick. Hopefully this just means that the fourth season will see a return to the form of the second season.
“Blink” deserves a 9,5 /10 and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it run away with next years Hugo Award, but the rest of the season is way too slow, a bit turgid and at times unoriginal. That’s why it gets 5,5 /10. A new low for this show, but I’ll keep watching it when the new season finishes.
