This show airs Thursday’s at ten o’ clock on Canal + and has now gotten around to the fifth episode. The story revolves around Dexter, who is a blood expert working in the L.A. Police. But that’s not the interesting part; Dexter is a very sane serial killer (say again? Oxymoron?) who only kills people who deserve to die. I.e. that they are serial killer’s themselves or done something else that the police couldn’t bring ‘em in for.

This is what makes the series so interesting. Dexter was adopted by a by-the-book policeman and raised to do the right thing. But Dexter wasn’t like any other kid; something had broken him when he was young and he was no longer able to feel emotions. He can’t cry, can’t love and he doesn’t have empathy worth a nickel. And he’s got an insatiable urge: he likes to kill. This is the main premise upon which the show is based. Dexter’s father discovered his urge and recognized that it could not be stopped. Instead he trained Dexter to sate his urge by killing criminals and animals, and he teached him to do it without getting caught.

Dexter kills a person for every episode, all the while he’s working for the police to catch other criminals. The main story arc is the nicknamed “Ice truck killer”, who kills much in the same way that Dexter does it; clean, surgically and without mistakes.

The acting in “Dexter” is good with one major exception; Dexter’s sister isn’t very good. She’s a cop too, but has been working in vice before she was moved up to homicide. She’s the weak link in the chain, but other than that there isn’t much to complain about.

I love the way Dexter is narrating his own life, kinda like J.D. in Scrubs, but much more sinister and serious of course. He contemplates his own situation and problems in a very thought provoking way. For example; he has a girlfriend, and she’s starting to notice his incapabilities. He doesn’t want to lose her, so he set’s out to find a way to show her that he does feel for her. He asks his friend’s, but they can’t help him, so he in the spur of a moment he decides to ask a serial-killing couple that he has tied down about how they can love each other. A surreal situation, to say the least.

If you’re looking for a good show, Dexter’s is it. I’d recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone.

On a side note: as I mentioned earlier; Dexter’s girlfriend, Rita, is the actress that plays the very first vampire in Buffy. Dexter loves blood, so did she when she played the vampire, and one of Dexter’s friends is named “Angel”. Kinda funny, right?
